Vegan Yum Cha

It's been too long between blogs for me but I have plenty o' spare time today because it's a public holiday, woo!

2 weeks ago our vegan group got together for yum cha at Newtown's Green Gourmet. I was really looking forward to yum cha because a. I'd never had yum cha before (vegan or pregan) and I'd never eaten at Green Gourmet. I took a lot of photos though I might have some of the names wrong, but enjoy visual yum cha:

Our first dish was rice paper rolls flled with rice noodles and veggies.

Kumera Ginger Purse - Sweet potato & ginger pastry filled with corn, soy beans, shiitake mushrooms, carrot and pickled radish

Tofu Taro Balls

Spinach Rice Paper Rolls - my least favourite because I don't like cooked spinach

Mock Calamari - I was hesitant to try these but they didn't taste fishy and they had a good texture to them

Tofu

Dumplings - my favourite dish, I love the flavour of these

Bbq Mock Pork - I think this was bbq faux pork witha sweetened hoi sin brown sauce, yum!

I think these were tofu skins

Dim Sims

Fried Rice Paper rolls - these were interesting, the outside was crispy, the insides were soft but I didn't like the sauce they came with, it was a bit smoky and sweet

Dessert! Coconut pumpkin balls, tapioca mango pudding, agar purple taro pudding and black stick rice in pandan leaf - I didn't like the purple one, it had a weird texture, but the coconut balls and sticky rice were quite nice

And more coconut pumpkin balls but these were also coated in sesame seeds and fried - these were good

All of this was enough for 6-7 people and we each paid about $13, such a great meal for a very low price! I can't wait to have yum cha again!

We then went next door to Vegan's Choice, a vegan grocery store. They sell cakes, ice cream, lots of frozen meals from Green Gourmet, mock meats, vegan cheeses, as well as burgers by Greenfields and a range of vegan products.

I got a scoop of coconut ice cream because it's one of my favourite flavours but they had a whole range includinng unusual flavours like green tea and black sesame.

And we spotted a cute cat, hanging out in the store :)

I also bought some frozen dumplings and a bar of Plamil's new chocolate with mint white chocolate chips, it's VERY minty!

The mock pork was my favourite dish when I was at Green Gourmet! It had a great texture, chewy like it was mushroom-based rather than gluten. I don't know, it was AMAZING. Then I had avocado icecream, which was a bit weird. I wish I was eating yum cha right now!

i'm a big big yum cha fan so i'm very jealous right now! it's good to see vegan choice still sells groceries - it used to stock a lot more when it was exclusively a grocery shop - none of this soda shop business going on...

With the exception of that jiggly purple dessert, everything looks scrumptious! How lucky you are to have a vegan grocery store!

I've got a major craving for Asian food now after looking at those pics.

I've been struggling with the same problem - too long between posts. I do enjoy your mega posts now. I am stuck though on the fact that they offer vegan dorian ice cream. Have you ever tried it? Dorian has a very interesting story.

Wonderful looking food. My son would go crazy over it.

lots of lovely looking food. great selection of the mock meats too. most of our local chinese restaurants only do tofu but one does mock duck.

the ice cream looks delish too.

That whole meal looks incredible, and so affordable! I would eat all of it, but especially the mock calamari.

Ooooo, this looks delicious! I've never had Yum Cha or eaten at Green Gourmet either, but you're tempting me a great deal... lol

How appropriate is it that the vegan grocery has a cat? :D

If you have never tried the yum cha at Bodhi in the Park, go there! It's in the city near the Australian Museum and the Catholic Cathedral.(I'm thinking it's William and Mary park, but that might be wrong.)

The food is very good, though it is a bit expensive. It's all vegan traditional yum cha, at lunch time.

I try to go when I go to Sydney for work and am free at lunch time. I eat and spend way too much every time!
